CS 3733 Operating Systems Recitations From VDI
The purpose of this note is to show you how to do various recitations using VDI
This was revised on January 25, 2016
- Log on to your VDI account.
- Choose the standard image (v0.03).
- Start -> All Programs ->XMING -> XMing
When you execute this, it may look like nothing has happened.
- Start -> All Progarms -> SSH Secure Shell -> Secure Shell Client
- In the SSH window: Edit -> Settings -> Tunneling
Click on Tunnel X11 connections
Click OK
- Log onto one of the elk machines:
In the main SSH window, push Enter or click Quick Connect
Note: the line below does not contain a typo. To log onto an elk machine you need to use hen, not elk.
Enter the host name (hen01.cs.utsa.edu, or some other hen), username, etc.
- Some of the recitations require getting things from the web, to do this start a browser from your elk command line:
firefox > /dev/null 2&>1 & (from the bash shell)
firefox >& /dev/null & (from the csh shell)
- Use this browser to download files to your linux account
Note: if firefox gives an error message saying that it is already running, delete the file .parentlock
which you can find in .mozilla/firefox/*default
