CS 3733 Operating Systems

Part I: Due January 21, 1998

• Set up a personal homepage and register it by following these directions.

• Send an email to your instructor (krobbins@runner.utsa.edu) giving your web page URL and your preferred email address.

Part II: Due January 28, 1998 (except for the part noted below): Exercise 2.14 on pages 72-73 of PUP.

• Make a cs3733/lab1 subdirectory in your home directory to keep the files for this assignment.

• There are 6 modifications listed in the exercise:
  1. Modify the path name for MAILDIR if necessary (you don't need to do this).
  2. Use stat instead of open.
  3. Use getuid and getpwuid instead of hardcoding in the user's name.
  4. Allow command line arguments.
  5. Handle MAIL and MAILCHECK.
  6. Handle MAILPATH (Note: this part is due February 4, 1998).

• Create a new source file when you add each modification and keep all six source files.
• Test each one separately.
• Use a makefile which has each of the five versions as a target.
• Lint all source files. Use the -m and -u options.
• Hand in copies of all five source files, your makefile and the lint output of the final version.
• You must indicate how you tested each part and what the results were.
